After an 11 year reign, Chef Wylie Dufresne will be closing the doors of his acclaimed wd~50 this November. The chef made the announcement on June 10 via twitter stating “Nov 30 will be our final night of service at wd~50. Come celebrate with us for the next 173 days. Stay tuned!!”

Wd50 is best known for their witty and whimsical menu and offerings. New York Post food critic Steve Cuozzo once described wd50 as witty but not wacky. The restaurant itself is full of rustic charm with plain wood tables and barn-like décor. However, the highlight for diners is the opportunity to see into the kitchen while Dufresne and staff create their masterpieces, one plate at a time.

Back in April, Boweryboogie.com reported that a new 7 story development project would likely swallow up the current streetscape on Clinton Avenue, where wd50 is located. At the time, Dufresne said he wasn’t going anywhere, but with the Chefs recent tweet it appears that isn’t the case.

Luckily, Dufresne fans can still visit Alder, located in the East Village.  While Alder is a hugely scaled down version of wd~50 without the hard core molecular gastronomy, it still presents the modern but whimsical atmosphere diner’s came to love about wd~50.

What’s next for Dufresne? No one knows yet but the chef. But we can only hope for another wd~50 style eatery where we can watch him make his magic.
